Like she said above, you’ll most likely have to call city hall about it, but I just googled ‘how to get a business license’ and got the link below. It looked good for information on the steps you’ll need to take to become your own business.
My husband and I operate our own street vending business and it’s been one hell of a ride! There are taxes to pay every three months, have someone you trust to do your numbers, unless you’re good with that kind of thing yourself, and most importantly keep every receipt for anything that is even remotely related to your business’ expenses. Those receipts add up to big big tax deductions for your income taxes. We’ve hired a little company of tax preparers who aren’t in any way affiliated with Jackson H. or H&R block (they aren’t worth the price they charge!!!! go with a privately owned business you find in the yellow pages.) and they can do all the things an accountant can do and for much much cheaper. Especially if you’re self employed!
Don’t be afraid of delving into all this tax stuff and number crunching that comes with owning your own business… the bottom line fact is that being your own boss will make you more money in a shorter amount of time, than you ever thought possible. It’s the most fullfiling thing you’ll ever experience, especially if you’re successful and do beautiful work. The harder and smarter you work and the more fair you are to yourself as an employee and to your customers, the more reward you will see from it.
Another good thing to have on your side would be an inside source for your supplies. Find some way to get your supplies cheaper, so you can underbid and still make a good profit for your labor. Try to find ways to trim your overhead without cheating. Cheating = Bad Karma, don’t fall for the temptation.
Don’t stop dreaming bigger. Always think big and dare to take risks. Good luck on getting your business rolling.
