I’m moving across the country – any tips?
I’m moving from Minneapolis to southern California in late August. I know it’s going to be tough money wise, but I’ll have enough saved up to start, and I’m going out next week to start interviews. I have minimal belongings that I will need to bring out. I’m just going to send out a few boxes, then fly out. Still, I’d still like to save as much on the move as possible.
Does anyone have any tips for moving across the country from their own experience? I’m very excited it – I’ll have many more job options, and the climate’s obviously much nicer, but I’m still a bit nervous and I don’t really know anyone out there. I’d love to hear from other people who have done the same!
Also, does anyone know the cheapest way to ship a few large boxes? What company do I use?

make sure you have a job and a place to live when you get there…also be extreamly social cause your going to need new friends….its hard meeting new people in a area your not familiar with

As for boxes-I sell on Ebay and UPS and DHL etc still can’t compare to USPS-you can go direct to their site and even download your mailing labels (pay by C Card) and get them to p/u free the next day.
I live in So Cal. Check out San Diego- nicer than LA area and you get the beaches-expensive of course but nice. Also OC and I grew up in the Inland Empire and live there now. Try Temecula and Murrieta. We can drive to the mountains or the beach and have cooler weather than farther inland. Many area jobs are here and San Diego (where hubby works) is not far. Also many colleges etc. Anything you need is here or driving distance. YOU MUST HAVE A VEHICLE- otherwise it can get crazy. California is a driving state completely. This area is friendly and newer-safe and filled with wineries, art groups, museums and cultural events. Also San Diego. Its a neat way to meet and explore. Also many sports groups-like softball,soccer and swimming. You don’t say your age but they range from elementary up to seniors. You’ll go through culture shock I think and then love it. The West is the only place I’d live. (weather and "culture") even though I’ve worked and traveled much and enjoy many other areas. Good Luck!
I moved to southern cali a couple years ago. I love it here!!!! I’m positive you will too. don’t worry about not knowing anyone – the people who live here are all very friendly (at least, that’s what i found).
there’s great culture and cafés down here. in fact, there’s great everything! i would never dream of living anywhere else now and am so glad i made the move! i’ve made such wonderful friends.
i was a little nervous at first but i love it here so much and i’m sure you will too! it’s really a great place.
about the boxes…. i suggest USPS (that’s what i used). i sent all my belongings out here first and then flew over (like you’re doing), but i sold all of our furniture and stuff. then when i arrived here i bought all new furniture. i think it’s easier that way (you don’t have to worry about transporting stuff across the country)…
