I rented an apartment on a 5 month lease (weird I know) and was told that a lot of things would be fixed/improved before I moved in. Needless to say none of these things were done and I didn’t get them in writing mostly because all of these improvements are huge code violations in Minneapolis. Along with the code violations I recently called the city of Minneapolis and found that the renters license on the property is only for a triplex and they have 4 apartments in the building. The code violations include a non-working oven (has never worked), non-working electrical outlets and an ant infestation. I’ve called the city of Minneapolis on these and they’ve come out and documented the issues. They’ve "red-tagged" the violations and are forcing the rental company to fix them but at this point it’s too much for me to want to continue living here. In addition to the legal issues there are multiple nuisance issues. Maintenance and the real estate agent have entered my apartment with no notice multiple times. The parking is a mess, each apartment is supposed to have 2 spaces but there are constantly guests parked in the lot and most of the apartments have 3 or 4 cars parked in the lot so I’m left with nowhere to park. The garbage is never collected and there are always bags and boxes of garbage and broken glass all over behind the house. Also the upstairs neighbors are constantly smoking pot and the place reeks. I’ve called the management multiple times and they either say that they’ll take care of it or they don’t answer and never return phone calls. I basically at this point have a month left on my lease and just want to cut my losses so I can move into a livable place. I don’t have the time to take them to court to break it so I’m looking for possible situations in which I could demand/ask to be released early. I’d even agree to call off the investigation in return for the lease-end. I may go to court at a later date to re-coup rent paid but that’s in the future. PS: what are my rights if I find that the apartment is illegal?
